Masumoto Miki is an Asian girl in her early teens. The left side of her face is extensively scarred and her left eye has been replaced with a hi-tech optical device. She makes no attempt to hide her disfigurement and in fact seems rather proud of it. As Masumoto operates the ONI battlesuit remotely, she usually wears everyday clothing while working, although she does own a Defense Force Ultra combat suit in a green pattern.
Masumoto Miki is the daughter of Azumi Yoshiko, the original heroine known as ONI, and millionaire industrialist Masumoto Kazuki. When she was ten, Miki was kidnapped by the paranormal criminal known as Queen Ryu, who was attempting to coerce Kazuki into turning his operations over to her cult. ONI and her teammates in Defense Force Ultra managed to rescue her daughter, but Miki was gravely injured during the battle with Queen Ryu’s forces and lost her left eye. Yoshiko and Kazuki created a cybernetic replacement for the eye that looked completely normal, but even the best plastic surgeons could not entirely hide the extensive scarring Miki had suffered.
Always a quiet child, Miki became even more withdrawn after her ordeal. She had inherited her parents’ fondness for technological gadgets and tinkering now became her sole focus. Shortly after her kidnapping, Miki began demonstrating the same gizmoteering ability Yoshiko possessed. At first her parents were pleased with this development – until Miki removed her own cybernetic eye and “upgraded” it to a more functional yet completely inhuman model. The procedure also exaggerated Miki’s facial scars, but she seemed perversely pleased with her altered appearance.
Yoshiko decided to steer her daughter’s talents into a more positive direction. She revealed to Miki her identity as ONI and invited the youngster to help perform maintenance on the battlesuit. Miki went a step better and began implementing improvements on her mother’s design. Her most impressive achievement was developing a remote control system that allowed an operating to perfectly control ONI from miles away through the use of a “cyber-helmet” rig. Eliminating the need for an on-board operate opened up space for further upgrades, including augmentation of the robot’s strength and maneuverability and limited flight capability.
Miki spent long hours practicing her control of ONI and began substituting for her mother on non-critical Defense Force Ultra missions. The remote functionality of ONI 2.0 meant that Miki was always out of harm’s way, so Yoshiko encouraged her daughter to replace her full-time on the team. Yoshiko hopes that helping people and the positive influence of the rest of the DFU will help soften the hard edge that Miki has developed. It seems to be working.
|POWERS & ABILITIES|
Masumoto Miki is a technological genius with gizmoteering abilities. She has used her powers to augment the cybernetic eye her parents created for her, greatly expanding its sensory capabilities. She has also upgraded the ONI battlesuit in myriad ways, the most significant being full remote control functionality. When she is not operating ONI, Miki carries a zapgun pistol of her own design which is capable of stunning targets with sonic pulses.
Miki has the power to mentally “interface” with wireless devices in her proximity. Perhaps as an ancillary effect, Miki has developed a deep mental rapport with ONI and does not need to use the cyber-helmet to operate the battlesuit. It is not known if these abilities are natural or the result of further upgrades to her cybernetic eye.
Despite its upgrades, ONI is still just an extension of its operator and does not have artificial intelligence. It cannot use any mental skills on its own, but Miki can utilize her skills and skill Feats via her Sensory Link while she is in control of the robot.
|PERSONALITY & TACTICS|
Masumoto Miki is the complete opposite of her mother, cold and cynical where Yoshiko is friendly and optimistic. Her parents believe her dark personality is the result of the trauma she suffered during her kidnapping, but the truth is that Miki was always going to turn out this way. There is an anger deep inside of her that she sometimes has trouble controlling. Miki is not a bad girl and loves her family and respects her teammates, but pretty much everyone else around her is an idiot and she has no problem letting them know it.
Miki does share with her mother a deep love for technology, and the two have spent many nights together taking apart smartphones or installing upgrades into ONI. Miki has recently developed another love, a serious crush on the young anti-hero known as Ryu Rider. As he is both a motorcycle-riding bad boy and the son of her mother’s greatest enemy, Queen Ryu, it was probably inevitable.
In combat, ONI 2.0 definitely hits first and asks questions later. Yama is doing his best to teach her patience, but Miki’s youthful energy and bad temper almost always gets the better of her. Leaping before she looks has gotten her into plenty of tight scrapes, but so far she’s been able to handle everything thrown at her.
