Azumi Yoshiko is an attractive Asian woman of slight stature. As ONI 1.0, she wore a ten-foot tall suit of powered armor designed to look like a demon from Japanese legend. Azumi also owned a Defense Force Ultra uniform in a pink pattern.


Bio:

Azumi Yoshiko, the daughter of a robotics engineer, was a tinkerer from an early age. She loved taking apart household gadgets and fiddling with the spare parts her father brought home. When she was ten years old, the odd little devices she cobbled together actually started to work despite being technically unsound. Her parents realized that she was a paranormal with gizmoteering abilities. They did their best to keep their daughter’s powers a secret while still encouraging her interest in the applied sciences.

Yoshiko’s favorite project was the construction of a robot friend, just like the ones from her favorite television shows. She could never get the robot to function autonomously, however, and eventually reconfigured it into a cybernetic exoskeleton instead. Yoshiko and her father worked up a list of acronyms as potential names for the powered armor and eventually decided on ONI – Organic Neurological Interface. The two worked up a demonic-looking exterior for the battlesuit to go with its new name, and Yoshiko imbued the armor with an array of offensive and defensive capabilities.

On the day a giant monster stormed through downtown Tokyo, Yoshiko was beside herself with excitement. The movies and televisions shows she had always loved were coming true, and she was ready to put herself in the starring role. Despite her parents protests, the youngster donned her armor and flew off to battle the daikaiju. Upon arriving in Tokyo, Yoshiko encountered the rest of the new heroes who would soon form Defense Force Ultra and together they drove off Kaijusaur and restored order to the city.

Yoshiko and the others became overnight sensations. They soon had a corporate sponsor, a major toy company, which supplied them with uniforms, a headquarters, and a name: Defense Force Ultra. Yoshiko was the only member of the team who kept her true identity a secret from the general public, who believed that ONI was an independent artificial intelligence.

Yoshiko threw herself into her new role as a superhero and was devastated when Defense Force Ultra lost their sponsorship and disbanded in 1998. Her parents had made sure she kept up with her studies, so Yoshiko was able to secure a position with a NewTech firm designing prosthetic limbs and organs. She and the company’s president, Masumoto Kazuki, fell in love and married. Their daughter, Miki, was born a few years later.

Defense Force Ultra reunited to battle Kaijusaur once again in 2004. Yoshiko retired from her husband’s company to focus on superheroics and raising Miki. Kazuki supported his wife’s choices and for a time the family was very happy.

When Miki was ten, she was kidnapped by the evil Queen Ryu, who was attempting to take control of Kazuki’s company. Yoshiko was able to rescue her daughter, but not before the girl was seriously injured and lost her left eye. Yoshiko and Kazuki worked together on a computerized replacement for the eye, and Yoshiko retired as ONI to concentrate on taking care of Miki.

Miki eventually developed paranormal abilities of her own and followed in her mother’s footsteps as ONI 2.0. Yoshiko has been supportive of this as she hopes it will help soften the hard edge her daughter has developed since her kidnapping, and the ONI 2.0 suit can be operated remotely with Miki well out of harm’s way.


POWERS & ABILITIES

Azumi Yoshiko is a technological genius with gizmoteering abilities. Her greatest achievement has been ONI, a ten-foot tall suit of powered armor. The ONI battlesuit offers Yoshiko incredible resistance to harm, increases her strength exponentially, and provides an array of offensive capabilities including claws, gas projectors, and integral flame-throwers. ONI also has thrusters that can propel it at speeds up to 250 mph or send it rocketing into the air.


PERSONALITY & TACTICS

Azumi Yoshiko is naturally upbeat and has remained cheerful and optimistic despite the curves life has thrown at her. Her exuberance often made it difficult to maintain the fiction that ONI was an emotionless artificial intelligence, especially when a new piece of tech sparked her girlish enthusiasm. The rest of the DFU doted on their youngest teammate and she still considers them part of her extended family.

In combat, ONI and Yama comprised the team’s offensive line. Yoshiko’s spirited nature meant that she was usually the first one into battle and the last to quit. ONI especially loved taking on opponents in powered armor to pit her tech against another’s.
