Karnstein is an arrogant Caucasian man who appears to be in his mid-forties. His jet-black hair is streaked with grey at the temples, and he bears a small dueling scar on his left cheek. He affects a monocle, and his slight accent becomes more pronounced when angry. As Count Carnage, he wears a suit of powered armor decorated in the red, white, and black colors of the Austrian flag.

Bio:

August Karnstein was a European journalist whose strident anti-communist views and nationalistic screeds earned him a dedicated following in right-wing circles. Karnstein’s ultraconservative activism was driven by a desire to see the Austro-Hungarian Empire revived – with himself at the head. An avid student of history, Karnstein spent years researching his genealogy and arrived at the (highly dubious) conclusion that he was a heretofore unknown descendant of Charles I of Austria. Karnstein kept this revelation a secret out of fear of ridicule and reprisals from the “other” Hapsburg heirs, but still worked fervently to restore the Empire through his writings and politics.

Karnstein became aware of his paranormal abilities after a series of strange dreams in which he created wondrous machinery out of scrap metal and spare parts. On a whim, and despite a complete lack of technical training, he tried building a design from a particularly detailed and vivid dream. To his amazement, the device functioned perfectly.

Realizing that he had become a paranormal, Karnstein saw his new abilities as a mandate from heaven. Just as he was able to realize his dreams of amazing machines, so too would he be able to realize his dreams of a reborn Austro-Hungarian Empire. The devices he was now capable of producing were to help him achieve his goals. Karnstein immediately adopted the title of count to proclaim his noble lineage to the world, “modestly” reserving grander titles until after his efforts bore fruition.

Karnstein debuted his powered armor when he aided Slovenian forces during the Ten Day War. His presence is widely credited with turning the tide for Slovenia and discouraging further hostilities. (It was during this time that he was dubbed “Count Carnage” by the tabloid press.) As a reward for his service, Karnstein was given a remote Alpine chalet formerly used by a high-ranking Yugoslav official. Karnstein fortified the chalet with numerous gizmos and renamed it Schloss Karnstein. It remains his base of operations to this day.

Karnstein also covertly aided Croat forces during the Croatian War of Independence and the Bosnian War, supplying advanced weaponry and performing the occasional black ops mission. After the wars, many former veterans of those conflicts flocked to the Karnstein banner and formed the core of his private army.

Established as a force to be reckoned with in Eastern Europe, Karnstein continues to expand his influence and entrench his power. It is only a matter of time before his forces sweep across the land to restore the Empire under the iron hand of Karnstein.

POWERS & ABILITIES

Karnstein’s main paranormal ability is gizmoteering, which he has used to create a suit of powered armor that grants him an assortment of powers including super-strength, flight, and the ability to instantly adapt to any environmental hazard. Karnstein also produces various devices to aid him in the pursuit of his goals, including robotic servants. His inventions have a “steampunk” feel to them. This is an aesthetic choice reflecting his obsession with the 19th Century rather than a technological need; Count Carnage’s devices are not actually steam-powered.

Karnstein’s mental and physical abilities have also been enhanced by Wiser Energy, though not beyond normal human parameters. He is remarkably fit for a man his age and he possesses a genius-level intellect,

PERSONALITY & TACTICS

Karnstein is a staunch Catholic and far-right Conservative. His manners are stilted and very old fashioned. He is haughty with “inferiors” (which includes all women and people of color) and coolly familiar with those of noble blood.

Karnstein is motivated by his dreams of empire and his capers will be designed to advance that goal, however obtusely. He operates primarily in the area formerly encompassed by Austria-Hungary, including Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, and Romania. He is interested in forming alliances with influential people in the region, supporting Catholic and ethnic European causes, and acquiring artifacts of the Habsburg monarchy.
