Brian Goddard is a handsome Caucasian male in his early fifties. His only noticeable signs of aging are grey streaks in his hair at the temples. As Blackguard, Goddard wore a black and gold costume reminiscent of that worn by cinema swashbucklers.
Brian Goddard was an aspiring actor making ends meet as a Hollywood stuntman. While he was filming on location in 1984, an earthquake rocked the area and prematurely set off explosives being used for a stunt. Goddard instinctively dove for safety and, to his surprise, shrunk down small enough to hide behind the only available cover.
Goddard learned he could switch from his full height to three inches tall at will, and that his strength, speed, and endurance had been subtly enhanced. As the superhero craze of the 80’s was in full swing, Goddard had already been tempted to put his experience and skills to use as a vigilante. His new powers cinched the deal and Goddard was soon battling street crime in the LA area as Blackguard.
In short order, Blackguard met with other vigilantes operating on the West Coast and became a founding member of the Pacific Knights. Like many of his teammates, Goddard hoped that his activities as a superhero would help further his entertainment career. Goddard eventually sought to promote himself by revealing his secret identity during a much-publicized appearance on a late-night talk show in 1989. This appeared to be the final straw for the team’s leader, MidKnight, as he publicly disbanded the Pacific Knights a few days later.
Goddard retired from crime-fighting to focus on his acting career. He went on to play the lead in a network action series, Risk, starting in 1990. The series ran for five years and was syndicated all over the world, bringing Goddard international fame as the globe-trotting man of mystery, Jason Risk. After the show folded, Goddard attempted to make the switch to movies, but the low budget action films he found himself cast in were all box office flops. Nevertheless, Goddard continues to find steady employment in the European film industry and makes the occasional guest appearance on American television.
|POWERS & ABILITIES|
Brian Goddard’s strength, agility, and endurance were all slightly boosted through his exposure to Wiser Energy. Goddard has retained remarkable vitality and youthful vigor well into middle age.
Through concentration, Blackguard can shunt his mass into the Wiser Dimension and shrink down to a three inch height. As he does not retain his normal strength at this miniscule height, Blackguard finds this superpower of limited use and is actually a bit embarrassed by it.
As Blackguard, Goddard carried a special weapon designed for him by MidKnight, an electroshock stun baton shaped like a pirate sabre. Blackguard’s armored costume was also developed by MidKnight and provided him with extra protection against bladed weapons and small arms fire.
Early in his career, Blackguard would travel on the back of his pet raven, Rogue, a highly-trained creature that demonstrated great intelligence even by the standards of that breed. (For unknown reasons, Rogue was replaced with “Bloodwing the Bat” on the Pacific Knights’ Saturday morning cartoon show.)
Brian Goddard is a trained acrobat, certified stage combat instructor, and proficient martial artist. He still keeps these skills honed in case he needs them for a role.
|PERSONALITY & TACTICS|
Brian Goddard has a laid-back charm that makes him the kind of guy you’d like to have a beer with (and if you’ve ever hung out in an L.A. bar, you probably have). He is a romantic at heart with a strong set of values informed by a lifetime spent watching classic films. Goddard is a serial monogamist who falls in (and sadly, out) of love rather easily.
Blackguard liked to make an impression when he entered a fray, striking poses and issuing dramatic challenges to shake up villains. He almost always engaged foes at his full size and strength and reserved his shrinking power for when stealth and subterfuge were required. Blackguard gravitated towards opponents also armed with swords or other melee weapons, eager for the opportunity to recreate the swashbuckling adventures of the silver screen.
